Virtual private networks (VPN) are widely popular among users who want to dodge content restrictions and are conscious about their privacy online. Those who want to access Internet via a VPN are either required to install third-party software or browser plug-ins. And while some of the best services are expensive, the free ones don't work efficiently as they claim. Opera is now addressing this problem with its latest developer version of its desktop browser that comes integrated with built-in free and unlimited VPN.
“We are the first major browser maker to integrate an unlimited and free VPN or virtual private network. Now, you don't have to download VPN extensions or pay for VPN subscriptions to access blocked websites and to shield your browsing when on public Wi-Fi,” the company said in its blog post.
For those unaware, VPNs route the Internet traffic through servers that are located in different countries. Opera web browser offers 256-bit encrypted connection which makes it difficult for hackers or governments to monitor web traffic, which allows you to access content that may have geo-restrictions in certain countries. For instance, Indian users can use a VPN to access content on American Netflix. The developer version of the browser can be downloaded from here.
How to activate VPN on Opera web browser
Once you download and install the Opera web browser, you'll need to manually turn on the free VPN. To do this, click on Menu button on the top left corner of the web browser. Then click on Settings > Privacy & Security > Tick the 'Enable VPN' box and you're done.
Next, head over to the address bar try visiting a website that is blocked in your country. If everything goes fine, the left corner of the address bar will show a VPN icon with either orange or blue color. If its shows orange color, you'll probably need to change the 'virtual location.' While USA is recommended, you can even give a try by selecting Germany or Canada.
What's more, clicking on the VPN icon also shows you the data transferred in the current month and the IP address of your VPN too. Go ahead, download the developer version of Opera browser and enjoy accessing Internet anonymously.
